Our advice: skip the airport SIM kiosks that charge tourist prices and activate your eSIM before you land to start navigating Bangkok’s chaos immediately.

Travel eSIMs typically connect to AIS, DTAC, or TrueMove H networks, with all three offering 5G in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Pattaya as of 2024. According to network testing, urban areas deliver speeds above 100 Mbps with 5G, while tourist destinations maintain solid 4G performance at 20 to 50 Mbps. Remote islands and rural villages experience weaker signals, though coverage remains surprisingly reliable even in less developed areas.

Airport connectivity and installation

All major Thai airports offer free Wi-Fi and have eSIM QR code kiosks, but traveler experiences show these kiosks charge significantly more than international eSIM plans purchased ahead of time. Installing your eSIM before departure means instant connectivity without dealing with queues during peak tourist season.

Getting around without the hassle

Grab is your go-to for taxis and food delivery across Thailand, and we used it extensively throughout Bangkok and Chiang Mai. We found it much safer and cheaper than hailing taxis on the street, with upfront pricing that eliminates language barriers with drivers. One caveat: we’ve had issues with foreign cards on GrabPay, so don’t rely on it as your only payment method.

Bangkok’s transport system and infamous traffic

Bangkok’s BTS Skytrain and MRT subway are fast, cool, and clean, while the Chao Phraya River ferries offer a cheap and scenic alternative. But we have to say, Bangkok traffic ranks among the worst we’ve experienced across travels in the Middle East and South America. If you can avoid being stuck in a taxi during rush hour, do it. The metro system operates with precision, making it the most reliable way to navigate the city during peak hours.

LINE dominates local communication

Thailand’s internet works great for everyday use with widely available Wi-Fi in cafes and malls, though public networks tend to be unreliable according to user experiences. Here’s what caught us off guard: although some Thais use WhatsApp, it’s mostly just to communicate with foreigners from what we observed.
