Real Life Insights in Spain
Weather, Seasons and Staying Connected
Navigating Spain’s Cities and Day Trips
When staying in Madrid or Barcelona, we preferred using them as a base and taking day trips to nearby towns rather than changing hotels constantly.
Google Maps and Citymapper both worked well in the bigger cities. Having a stable data connection helped us track metro and bus arrivals in real time and adjust our routes when needed.
In southern Spain and along the coast, driving was a great way to explore smaller towns and beaches. But in the cities, we found it better to park outside and use public transport.
Staying Connected with a Spanish eSIM
Data-only travel eSIMs worked perfectly for us since all our bookings, transport, translations and ticket scans ran through apps.
Public Wi-Fi exists in some plazas and train stations but we found it slow and patchy. Our travel eSIM kept us connected whether we were booking last-minute tickets, loading walking tour apps or looking up restaurant reviews.
Food, Culture and a Few Local Tips
We used Google Maps and TripAdvisor constantly to check menus, opening hours and reviews, especially in smaller towns where places close randomly or fill up fast, though we would not rely 100 percent on the closing times listed. Having data still helped us avoid disappointment.
Card payments are widely accepted but carry some euros for market stalls, bakeries and public toilets.
Attractions Worth Seeing
Day trips to places like Segovia, Montserrat and Ronda were simple to book last minute thanks to good signal and fast train apps.
Make your data plan last longer by enabling ‘Low Data Mode’ (iPhone) or ‘Data Saver’ (Android) for your travel eSIM. This is especially useful on long travel days across Spain when you’re not actively using your phone.
