Getting Around Without Breaking a Sweat
You’ll want data for route planning apps like MyTransport.SG and Citymapper. They give you live updates on train timings, bus arrival countdowns and even tell you which station exit to take.
Taxis and Grab are easy enough but public transport is so efficient that we rarely needed them. If you are heading out late or during the hottest parts of the day, they do come in handy.
Pedestrian crossings are strict. Jaywalking is not worth the fine. Walking in the humidity feels like swimming sometimes so wear light clothes and carry a travel umbrella.
Stay Connected in the Home of Travel eSIMs
Travel eSIMs in Singapore typically connect to Singtel, StarHub or M1, all offering excellent 4G and 5G coverage across the island. We had strong 5G most of the time, whether in the CBD, Sentosa or residential areas.
Data-only plans are more than enough here. Almost everything you do runs through apps, from transport to food delivery. WhatsApp, booking confirmations and QR code payments all worked seamlessly on our eSIM.
Public Wi-Fi exists in malls and MRT stations but it is far slower and less reliable than your eSIM. For the sake of your sanity, just stick with mobile data.
Food, Culture and Things to Know
Tap water is safe and we refilled our bottles everywhere. If you forget, 7-Eleven and Cheers convenience stores are on every corner.
Gum is banned and you will not find it anywhere. Small fines apply if you import or sell it but you will be fine as a tourist if you leave it at home.
Temples and heritage sites ask you to take your shoes off before entering.
We also spent some quality time sick in one of Singapore’s hospitals. They were clean, safe and incredibly efficient which made a bad day a lot easier to deal with. Having mobile data meant we could search for the nearest clinics, check reviews and make appointments easily while we waited.
Attractions Worth Seeing
Changi Airport is a destination by itself. If you have a long layover, visit Jewel for the indoor waterfall, which we have somehow managed to miss despite visiting Singapore three times.
The Southern Ridges walk and Pulau Ubin give you a different view of Singapore beyond the skyscrapers.
Booking tickets online in advance on your phone saves you from standing in queues at most attractions, so a reliable eSIM is a must if you want to skip the hassle.
For iMessage & RCS users, your phone might ask which line to use for messaging after you install your eSIM. To continue texting from your regular number while using data in Singapore, ensure you select your ‘Home’ or ‘Primary’ line as the default.
