ESIMs have arrived and are very much here to stay. We’re all for it, why bother with fiddly SIM cards, expensive roaming and waiting in line at a phone kiosk. At TEE, we will always favor an eSIM that can be purchased from an app or website.

Over time, more and more eSIMs are entering the game. Of those, Saily is one of the newer entrants, but Holafly has been around for quite a few years now. Does that mean Holafly will be better? In this Holafly vs Saily comparison, we’ll find out by comparing both brands directly on every factor we think is important for a positive eSIM experience. These two are amongst the biggest names in the industry thanks to their marketing efforts, but we’ll cut through the noise and call a winner – Holafly or Saily.

Our winner is Saily. Want to jump straight to the head to head breakdown to find out why? Click here.

Holafly

Since its inception in 2017, Holafly has become a major player in the eSIM industry. The company was founded by Pedro Maiquez and Yingyan Hu, who were motivated by their own struggles to stay online while traveling overseas. Initially headquartered in Valencia, Spain, Holafly has since expanded its operations globally. They now offer eSIM plans in more than 190 countries worldwide.

Holafly stands out from most eSIM providers with its unique “unlimited” data model. That means that their pricing structure is primarily based on the length of validity of a plan, rather than any data limits.

We’ve been using Holafly since back in 2022, putting them to the test in various locations around the world. While we’ve always had high hopes, unfortunately our experiences have been mixed. To summarize our Holafly review...

“A very popular eSIM with both positives and negatives. Holafly’s plans boast unlimited data and strong signal, but are impacted by slow speeds, high prices and other issues.“

We believe that Holafly has great promise, but there are really quite a few areas that need improvement. We therefore gave Holafly a rating of 3 out of 5 stars.

It’s worth noting that general online opinions tend to be somewhat more favorable…

  • App Store score: 4.1/5
  • Play Store score: 4.6/5
  • TrustPilot score: 4.6/5

Saily

Saily is a relative newcomer to the eSIM market, but one that continues to grow and improve, potentially thanks to some substantial backing. Saily was created by the team behind VPN giant, NordVPN and you can definitely see some similarities.

This is an image of Saily's app, specifically of how their esim plans work. On Saily you're able to install different countries on different eSIMs. This is a cool feature worth considering for the Holafly vs saily comparison

We’ve been using Saily almost constantly since its public launch in early 2024. We’ve been fortunate enough to try Saily in multiple countries around the world as it continues to update itself. We’ve been impressed with its customer support featuring 24/7 live chat, undercutting established brands like Airalo in prices, strong signal and more. Here’s our overall summary from our recent Saily review

“Saily offers a solid eSIM experience for travelers, with great pricing in many destinations. While it lacks the top features and speeds of more established providers, its user-friendly app and strong customer support make it a legit travel eSIM option.”

Overall we think Saily is a solid offering so far and is only getting better with additional updates. We gave Saily 4/5 in our review. Around the internet scores are pretty mixed, but there aren’t too many reviews just yet…

  • Google Play Store: 4.4/5
  • TrustPilot: 3.3/5

The breakdown: Holafly eSIM vs Saily eSIM

Note: We award the winner of each key factor with this medal.

Holafly

Saily

Holafly: Holafly has offered decent signal in all countries that we’ve tried it in so far.

Signal

Saily: Saily’s signal is also usually decent. However, Saily performs better by offering a choice of networks to help you get the best signal wherever you are.

Holafly: Holafly regularly underwhelms when it comes to speed. We often see Holafly finishing last in our speed tests.

Speed

Saily: Speeds on Saily can be quite inconsistent. Saily isn’t normally among the quickest eSIM tested in any given country, but are normally usable and are faster than Holafly.

Holafly: Prices are generally higher for shorter plans, but lower for longer plans. Unfortunately the slow speeds mean it’s not the best value overall.

Price and value

Saily: Saily prices itself as cheaper than the likes of Airalo, AloSIM, etc but more expensive than others such as Ubigi, GoMoWorld, Jetpac, etc. While it’s hard to compare prices on a like for like basis, we think Saily offers better value overall than Holafly.

Holafly: Holafly’s app is generally fine, with some bugs. For example, it switches language to Spanish at times and finding United Kingdom plans is a challenge.

App

Saily: Saily’s eye-catching app is far more functional and intuitive. Saily is also regularly adding new features, which is great to see. We’d still like to see full plan information such as network, 4G or 5G, etc.

Holafly: No loyalty scheme offered.

Loyalty scheme

Saily: No loyalty scheme offered. Only referrals.

Holafly: Holafly’s customer support offering is generally decent, with live chat available after a number of screening questions. We have found some delays in response time, but problem resolution is generally fine.

Customer support

Saily: Saily offers genuinely 24/7 live chat customer support that’s helpful and pleasant. We think it’s probably the best support in the eSIM market.

Holafly: Available in over 200 countries and regions.

World availability

Saily: Available in 174 countries and regions.

Holafly: Nothing

Anything else?

Saily: Nothing

Our opinion: Saily is the winner.

Saily is the clear winner in our comparison, beating Holafly in almost every factor that we think is important.

Our top 3 factors are signal, speed and price/value. As you can see above, Saily performs better than Holafly on all 3. For us, Holafly’s lack of speed makes it difficult to use and decreases its overall value as well.

Aside from that, Saily’s app and customer support are strong points. We think that their 24/7 live chat customer support is a particular highlight, with staff that are both friendly and useful.

Holafly offers a specific service for a specific niche – those looking for unlimited data. We think that the overall service could do with improvement to be more competitive overall however.

In conclusion, we would recommend Saily for the best eSIM experience on your next trip.
