Where to start with an introduction to our Vietnam guide? Landing in Hanoi, we experienced an assault on all senses: sights, sounds, smells, bikes – so many bikes in so many directions. Considerations for choosing an eSIM in Vietnam:
- Data Required: Work out how much data you’ll need to ensure you get the best value for your money. Think about your data usage habits while overseas, the length of your stay, and what activities you plan to do online. Plans available can range from 1GB to unlimited data.
- Trip and Plan Duration: Consider how long you’ll be in Vietnam and choose a plan that covers the entire trip. It’s crucial to install prior to departure and activate your eSIM either before leaving if possible or upon arrival to maximize the plan’s validity period.
- Countries to Visit: Heading to just one country? Simply purchase your eSIM to cover Vietnam. Visiting more than one country? You have the option to buy multi-country plans that will cover an entire region. At TEE, we tend not to recommend them as they are usually more expensive than single-country plans. You get a lot more value from a little more work by simply purchasing a different eSIM for each country and using your data fully.
- Do You Need a Phone Number? We really didn’t need a phone number during our month in Vietnam as we used our home number on Grab for taxis, food, etc. AloSIM is a great option for internet calls but if you need a local number, a physical SIM may be the better option for you.
- Tethering/Personal Hotspot Functionality: Do you need an eSIM that you can connect other devices to? Make sure that you get an eSIM that supports personal hotspot/tethering. Most do.
- eSIM Performance: Make sure you get the eSIM that performs best overall in a number of factors including signal, speed, price/value, app, loyalty schemes, customer support, app performance, etc. Our top 3 most important factors? Speed, signal, and price/value.

What you need to know
Ubigi was a joy to use in Vietnam, signal was strong, speeds were the fastest tested and considering the speeds, the value across all tiers of data is very good. With a few improvements to the app, it’d be perfect.
Signal
Ubigi is the only eSIM we tried in Vietnam that doesn’t use Mobifone. Though the app will simply show the network as “Ubigi”, it’s actually using Vinaphone, the second biggest network in the country and you won’t be able to switch to any others. Is that an issue? Nope, signal was solid for us from North to South, urban and rural, even up in the relatively remote mountains of the Hai Van Pass.
In Vietnam, Ubigi is offering a data only eSIM that works on 4G only. A common theme.
Speed
We were very impressed by Ubigi’s speeds throughout the whole country of Vietnam, but especially in Hanoi. We test a lot of eSIMs in a lot of places so it’s easy to get used to a certain level of performance, but when an eSIM is really quick like this one, it definitely stands out. What does that mean in the real world? Quick every day performance during the mundane tasks like checking Maps, emails, social, etc to being able to watch videos in high quality at a cafe. We left very impressed.
So how does that look in terms of our speed tests? Ubigi speeds hit 180 Mbps, a mobile speed that’s fast enough for almost all of the tasks that you could throw at it. We don’t really recommend uploading over data, but if you just need to, 25 Mbps upload speed is not too bad compared to what we’ve seen in some countries either.

Ubigi offers some of the best value packages available in Vietnam, rivaled only by GoMoWorld. Usually we’d pick out a package that stands out as the best option in terms of value but really, all 3 are great value at their respective data levels.
The 3GB for $7 plan offers the second best price per GB available for 3GB of data ($2.33) after GoMoWorld. The 10GB for $14 plan’s $1.40 per GB of data is the best available at that tier and the 50GB for $39 comes in at $0.78 is the second cheapest price per GB available from our list and one of the top 2 high data packages available.
So does it offer value? The answer is a resounding yes. Match up the best in class speeds with the (almost) best in class pricing and you get a winning combination absolutely deserving of the title Best eSIM for Vietnam.
App
Ubigi’s app works fine, but lacks the polish and bells and whistles that quite a few others have. You may encounter frequent log outs and pages taking that little bit longer to load, for example. We also would like to see more plan details on the app, as things stand information like 4G vs 5G, network choice, etc are all only available on the website.
Anything else?
Ubigi’s customer support hasn’t been the best for us when needed, though that’s only been once or twice. We’d like to see quicker responses and live support like many others offer. They also don’t offer a loyalty scheme the way that many others do. Please get on that Ubigi!

What you need to know
AloSIM was very reliable for us. Speeds were fast, signal was strong. The app is bulletproof and you get a few extras too.
Signal
AloSIM’s signal worked well for us throughout the country, regardless of our type of location. Like almost all of the travel eSIMs, it works on Mobifone: one of, if not the biggest networks in Vietnam. We were rarely short of a good level of signal, even in the more remote areas.
AloSIM’s plans are data only, worked on 4G only and do not allow you to switch network, Mobifone is the only one available.
Speed
What really impressed us most with AloSIM was the speeds offered in all of the major cities in Vietnam. All of your day to day tasks that require a phone and internet? Handled with ease. Video calls, streaming at high quality? Also handled with (relative) ease. We were generally impressed with how AloSIM handled everything we threw at it.
So how about the speed tests? AloSIM performed well, coming in second place with a speed of 120 Mbps. Any score of over the100 Mbps mark is always welcome and we’re glad to see AloSIM clear it by some distance. Upload speeds were also second highest at 36.7 Mbps, very respectable for mobile internet.

What you need to know
Airalo is once again a solid all-rounder in Vietnam. Speeds are good, signal is good though pricing is slightly on the expensive side. We think that the ability to switch between 2 networks is a strong differentiator and one that we appreciate.
Signal
At TEE, we value the ability to switch between networks in circumstances where your current network has little to no bars of signal or speeds are a little lackluster. Airalo is the only travel eSIM we tried in Vietnam that allowed us to switch between networks, specifically Mobifone and Viettel, so major points to them for that. In truth, as we’ve touched on here, signal on Mobifone is generally solid throughout the country and there were only a couple of instances where we switched over to Viettel and vice versa.
Both networks provided data only plans and signal on 4G only.
Speed
Airalo’s speeds were fast pretty much all the time, and that goes for both networks that we tried. Like AloSIM, we were able to browse, check emails and social, make clear video calls and stream in relatively high quality.
Speed tests also show fast speeds on both networks tested. We have quoted the faster of the two for our speed table, showing Viettel’s 112 Mbps, however Mobifone also managed 96 Mbps. Two decent offerings. Upload speeds were a touch slower than the top scorers at 24.1 Mbps.

As we mentioned above, Airalo’s pricing is right in line with AloSIM’s. That is generally a little more expensive than the competition at every level of data.
Airalo is also an eSIM that will have you paying a little more, but getting a solid service with great signal and speeds with minimal fuss and up to 10% in credit back thanks to their loyalty scheme. Just how valuable that is to you is a personal decision, for us, we think there is value to be found.

What you need to know
GoMoWorld is all about the value for us. Pick GoMoWorld for a reliable low cost and high value offering.
Signal
Once again, signal is with Mobifone. Signal is solid throughout the country and we didn’t experience any drop offs or congestion issues when using GoMoWorld. We felt we could rely on GoMoWorld for solid signal.
Plans are data only, working on Mobifone 4G network only.
Speed
GoMoWorld’s speeds in Vietnam were just okay and among the slower eSIMs we tried, ranking 5th out of 8, with a download score of 37.1 Mbps. However, we found GoMoWorld to be good enough for every day use, such as: Browsing the web, checking emails, checking social, maps and navigation etc. Where it wasn’t as good as others was video calls, streaming and other activities that require the higher speeds, so just be aware of that. Upload speed was actually the fastest tested at 40.3 Mbps. If you’re uploading a lot in Vietnam, go with GoMoWorld!

Price and value is where GoMoWorld really shines, offering the cheapest price per GB option with a 30GB plan coming in at $21.48, which is $0.72 per GB. This is one of the cheapest we’ve seen anywhere. 14 GB for $14 at $1 per GB is also a great value deal unmatched in Vietnam. Finally 3 GB for $4.31 is a great option for those not requiring a huge amount of data and shorter-term trips. The only downside is that it’s only valid for 7 days.
So the prices are great, the only tradeoff is the speeds not being as fast as the competition. How does that work as an overall package? For us, still fantastic value.

The GoMoWorld app works well and is fully functional. It’s also very… different. Get ready for space journeys, planets and other animations. We like it, it definitely stands out.
The only things missing for us? The app layout is not the most intuitive and it lacks plan details such as 4G/5G and networks available.

What you need to know
Nomad offers a solid and reliable experience in Vietnam. Speeds are decent, signal is strong and there are no glaring weaknesses. You’ll just get faster and/or cheaper elsewhere.
Signal
Signal is once again provided by Mobifone so you’re going to have a reliable experience throughout the country in all types of areas. We didn’t have many instances where we were caught short without signal, a good thing as no other network options are available.
Signal is 4G and data only, no calls or SMS included.
Speed
Nomad’s speeds are generally pretty good and right there on the cusp of “really good”. You will absolutely be able to use Nomad for your day to day activities online: Emails, social, browsing etc. Video calls will generally work fine as well. Streaming, watching videos and other activities requiring fast speeds will be a bit more of an issue however.
The speed tests have Nomad’s speed coming in at 87.1 Mbps download and 25.6 Mbps upload. Pretty good speeds, but only 4th of 8 in download speed of the travel eSIMs tested.

Nomad’s pricing in Vietnam is right about in line with Airalo and AloSIM, which is interesting to us as they do usually offer plans that bit cheaper than both. The only plans where Nomad are cheaper are the 10GB and 20GB data allowances, which are both $2 less than Airalo and AloSIM.
There is better value to be had from AloSIM and Airalo thanks to for example, faster speeds and great loyalty programs, but Nomad still offers a solid service overall.
App
The Nomad app is well built, functional, offers a lot of detail and generally one of our favorites. The only thing that we think could be slightly improved is the logic of finding your destination, it doesn’t feel the most intuitive to us.

Nomad has a loyalty program, very much appreciated on a reliable eSIM like Nomad.

What you need to know
Holafly offers unlimited data plans which sounds great, unfortunately speed performance is frustrating, making it a tough sell.
Signal
Like a few others and as always with Holafly, they don’t show the actual network that you’re on, renaming it to “Holafly”. The good news is that signal is solid. We were able to use our phone throughout, even in very crowded spaces, for example as we watched a dragon on a bridge spit out fire and water (Da Nang Dragon Bridge).
Holafly offers 4G Data only plans without the ability to switch to other networks.
Speed
Unfortunately Holafly’s speeds were slow. This showed up in every day usage, making even the most basic tasks take a while, leading to a somewhat frustrating experience. While websites will usually load albeit slowly, we would find that even social media and Maps would either take a while to load or hang and not load.
The download speeds back that up, with Holafly scoring a lowly 5.34 Mbps download, placing it narrowly ahead of GigSky for 6th position out of 7 tested.

All Holafly plans in Vietnam and most of the world offer unlimited data. The interpretation of “unlimited” and potential speed throttling is a hot topic online, but we’ve never really seen any evidence of throttling.
What we see in Vietnam is slow speeds, which make even general usage somewhat frustrating. If you’re opting for unlimited data, there’s a high chance that you want to be able to use apps that require significant data and high speeds. Unfortunately with speeds of only 5Mbps, that won’t really be possible on Holafly in Vietnam.
For that reason, we’d have to say that there isn’t much value to the Holafly plans. If you want a high data plan, shoot for one of the other providers’ options.
App
The Holafly app is a mixed bag, while it’s improved significantly since we first started using it and looks much cleaner, it still has its quirks such as not showing us our remaining data allowance, the occasional language switch etc.
