Our eSIM experience in Malaysia

Pricing:

According to our own overall price tracking, Malaysia is a very cheap place to buy an eSIM, in fact, one of the cheapest countries we track.

Excluding free trials, you can pick up small data plans for as low as $0.40 to $0.70, which is highly competitive compared to many other countries.

As with most eSIM markets, plans usually get cheaper per GB as you buy more data. That’s why we often use the $1 per GB mark as a useful benchmark across countries. In Malaysia, a lot of plans fall significantly under $1 per GB, especially once you get to 5 GB plans or higher.

That matters because the amount of data you need to buy before prices drop below $1 per GB is a good indicator of how cheap an eSIM market really is. In some more expensive countries, eSIM plans barely get under $1 per GB at all. In Malaysia, they often do, and at relatively low data amounts too.

Signal:

We generally had reasonable signal in Malaysia around Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding areas. A lot of eSIM providers now offer 5G, where 2 years ago very few did, this was a very welcome upgrade. 5G was generally available with at least 2 out of 4 bars of signal in most places, however, speeds were generally another story.

Speeds & Stats

Unfortunately speeds are not very quick across most providers in Malaysia, even on 5G. While our average download speed test score was a very respectable 119 Mbps and our average upload speed was a reasonable, if somewhat underwhelming 18 Mbps, that doesn't quite tell the whole story.

The best results were all from the U Mobile network, which delivered the strongest speeds by far in our Malaysia testing. When an eSIM connected to U Mobile, performance was often genuinely impressive, with fast downloads, smooth browsing and enough speed for maps, social media, streaming and hotspot use.

The issue was that performance dropped quite a bit on the other networks we tested. Speeds were often much lower, but more importantly, they were much less consistent. In real life, that matters just as much as the headline Mbps number. A connection can look fine in one speed test but still feel frustrating if it keeps dipping, stalling or struggling to respond when you open an app.

That was the main problem we noticed in Malaysia. At times, apps either loaded slowly or did not load properly at all. So while Malaysia can absolutely deliver fast eSIM speeds, our testing showed that the local network your eSIM connects to makes a huge difference. U Mobile was the clear standout, while the others felt far more mixed in day to day use.

Mobile Operators

Malaysia has 5 main mobile network operators (MNOs):

1. U Mobile

U Mobile was comfortably the fastest network we tested in Malaysia and honestly it did not feel close.

Every eSIM we tested on U Mobile hit fast speeds, consistently achieving triple digit download speeds. It also produced our fastest speed test result in Malaysia at 448 Mbps.

More importantly, the network actually felt fast in day to day use. Apps loaded quickly, browsing felt responsive, maps updated instantly and hotspot performance was solid throughout our testing.

The biggest downside is that relatively few travel eSIMs were able to use the U Mobile network. In many cases, we had to manually switch networks ourselves because the eSIM defaulted to slower alternatives too.

2. Celcom Digi

Celcom Digi was much more mixed.

At its best, it could deliver perfectly respectable speeds and a generally smooth experience. We had moments where it felt fast enough for pretty much everything you would realistically need while traveling in Malaysia.

The big problem was consistency. Speed performance fluctuated quite a bit depending on location, time and even eSIM provider. Unfortunately there were moments where the connection became noticeably unresponsive despite showing 5G signal.

It was still far more usable than Maxis overall, but definitely less dependable than U Mobile during our testing.

Best for:

• General travel use
• Wider compatibility across eSIMs
• Balanced coverage and speed

3. Maxis

Maxis was unfortunately the most frustrating network we tested in Malaysia.

Despite often showing 5G signal, real world performance was frequently slow and unresponsive. Simple regular tasks like opening apps, loading websites or refreshing maps could sometimes take much longer than we'd like.

It also delivered the slowest speed test results of any Malaysian network. Speeds were frustrating enough that we found ourselves manually switching away from it whenever possible.

Best for: Honestly, difficult for us to recommend based on our testing

4. Unifi & YES

Interestingly, none of the travel eSIMs we tested connected to either Unifi or YES during our Malaysia trip.

That does not necessarily mean they are bad local networks, but simply that they currently appear to have very limited support across international travel eSIM providers.

Fastest eSIM tested in Malaysia

We tested 29 different eSIMs in Malaysia using the Ookla Speedtest app to compare real world download speeds. Where possible, we manually switched between available mobile networks on each eSIM to find the strongest performing setup for that provider. As always, these results reflect our own hands on testing at Travel ESIM Expert. Speeds can vary depending on your phone, exact location, network congestion and time of day, but this gives a useful comparison of how each eSIM performed during our Malaysia tests.

The average download speed across all 29 eSIMs was just under 119 Mbps, which is a surprisingly high average result. However, it's worth noting that Malaysia was a country where the gap between the fastest and slowest providers was huge. The top four eSIMs all passed 400 Mbps, while more than we'd like barely got past 30 Mbps.

The fastest eSIM we tested in Malaysia was Sim Local, with an excellent download speed of 448 Mbps. That put it narrowly ahead of Roamify and makes Sim Local the clear winner in our Malaysia speed testing. At these speeds, you should have no trouble streaming, browsing, using maps or hotspotting during your trip.

In second place, Roamify came in at 445 Mbps, only slightly behind Sim Local. This was another top result and shows that Roamify is one of the fastest eSIM options we tested in Malaysia.

Close behind in third, MicroEsim recorded 427 Mbps, making it another very strong performer. Together with ByteSIM in fourth place at 401 Mbps, these four providers were in a separate speed tier compared with the rest of the table.

After that, there was a noticeable drop. Esimatic still performed very well at 281 Mbps, while ETravelSim, BNESIM, eSIMo, RedteaGo and Firsty all delivered strong triple digit speeds.

Some of the biggest name eSIMs were much more average in Malaysia. Holafly came in at 75 Mbps, Saily hit 61 Mbps, Nomad reached 52 Mbps and Ubigi was 45 Mbps. These speeds are still fine for everyday travel use, but they were well behind the fastest performers in our Malaysia testing, though ahead of many others too.

At the bottom of the table, providers like Airalo, Instabridge, Jetpac, Jetogo, Roamless and Yesim were noticeably slower.

Roamify is the cheapest unlimited data eSIM in Malaysia of all that we tested. They have a number of different unlimited plans available in Malaysia, all with an average price of just over a dollar a day while their cheapest per day option is currently 20 days of unlimited data for $20, $1 a day. Fantastic value.

Considerations for choosing an eSIM in Malaysia

Mobile connectivity in Malaysia: Malaysia is not the easiest country for mobile connectivity. Speeds can be slower than expected and signal can struggle in certain areas even in Kuala Lumpur. That being said, it's especially important if you are traveling outside KL or spending time in places like islands, beach towns or more rural areas.

Where you are traveling next: If Malaysia is your only destination, a dedicated Malaysia eSIM is usually the best value option. If you are also visiting other countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia or Vietnam like we did, then a regional Asia plan would be far more convenient. Just make sure you compare the price, regional plans are usually more expensive than separate country specific eSIMs.

Speed and signal reliability: In Malaysia, performance should be one of the main things you look at before choosing an eSIM. Trust us a cheap plan is not always useful if speeds are too slow for maps, ride hailing apps or basic browsing. 5G access: Malaysia does have 5G coverage in many major areas now, but not every travel eSIM will give you 5G access. Some providers may only connect to 4G or may switch between networks depending on location. Check our results to see which providers offer the top 5G signal.

How much data you need: Choose your data allowance based on how long you are staying and how heavily you use your phone. For a short trip, a smaller plan may be enough. Personal hotspot and tethering: Most eSIMs allow hotspot use, but it is still worth checking before you buy. This is especially important if you need to connect a laptop, tablet or another phone while traveling around Malaysia.

About our testing

We visited Malaysia from 18 April to 12 May 2026, entering the country overland from Singapore through the Johor Bahru border.

After arriving in Malaysia, we spent one night in Johor Bahru before taking the train up to Kuala Lumpur. The journey was a great experience, even if it was a little long, and it gave us a useful chance to use different eSIMs outside the usual airport and city center testing environment.

We used eSIMs in Johor Bahru, on the train to Kuala Lumpur and throughout our stay in the city. However, Kuala Lumpur was the main focus of our Malaysia testing, with most of our time spent around the KLCC Park area.

Our formal speed tests were carried out from the same covered bench area inside KLCC Park. We used this spot as our main testing location so we could keep conditions as consistent as possible across providers.

We ran the 29 eSIM speed tests using 2 iPhone 17 Pro Max phones and the Ookla Speedtest app. Where possible, we tested providers at similar times and in the same location. We also manually switched networks on each eSIM to check whether performance changed between available Malaysian mobile networks.

Alongside the speed tests, we used the eSIMs for normal day to day connectivity, including maps, browsing, messaging and hotspot use.

Malaysia was not the easiest country we tested for mobile connectivity. Some eSIMs performed well, but others struggled with slower speeds or less consistent signal than we expected, even in central Kuala Lumpur. That made real world testing especially important for this guide.

Malaysia travel: Our thoughts and experience

KL is not as walkable as it looks

Kuala Lumpur can be a strange city for walking. Landmarks often look close in real life, but once you check the route properly, you realise it can easily turn into a 40 to 60 minute walk. The city has some great covered walkways in places, especially around central areas, but they are not everywhere.

The metro system is clean, affordable and air conditioned, but we found it didn't always connect perfectly with where we were staying. Because of that, we still ended up walking a lot, which we do enjoy anyhow.

Always bring an umbrella because the rain comes heavy and fast

Malaysia’s weather can change very quickly. In KL, you can go from clear skies to heavy rain without much warning, so an umbrella is always worth carrying. The covered walkways help when you're near them, but you shouldn't rely on always being able to stay dry.

The rain can be seriously intense and accompanied by lightning. In truth, our weather apps didn't do a great job of warning us when downpours were coming, so we generally tried to get outdoors whenever we could.

Grab is extremely useful in Malaysia

Grab is one of the most useful apps to have in Malaysia. We used it for both transport and food delivery throughout our stay. Even though KL does have good public transport, Grab is often the easier option when the route is awkward, it's raining or the heat makes walking less appealing.

Having mobile data is especially useful when using Grab, as you will often need to message drivers, confirm pickup points or check whether walking to a metro station is actually worth it.

The heat and humidity are intense

Kuala Lumpur is hot, humid and very tropical. We noticed a lot of locals walking around with personal fans and after a bit of research, we bought Jisulife fans ourselves. They were genuinely useful, although sometimes you are just blowing warm air into your face, not ideal.

If you aren’t used to humid weather, make use of malls, metro stations and air conditioned restaurants, I almost passed out after trying to jog, even in the morning.

Malaysia is incredible value for travelers

Malaysia is one of the best value destinations we've visited in Asia. Food is affordable, accommodation is reasonable and you can stay in Kuala Lumpur for much less than in other places.

For context, we paid for around 3 weeks of accommodation in KL for roughly the same price as about 8 nights in Hong Kong. That makes Malaysia a great option for longer stays, especially if you want a major city experience without the same accommodation costs as other cities.

The food is a huge part of the trip

Malaysia is one of the best food countries in the world. Satay, char kway teow, nasi lemak, hokkien mee, rendang and hawker style dishes are all worth trying and that barely scratches the surface.

We also loved Madam Kwan’s, although we are fully aware it might be for the tourists. Still, it is a good place to try a few Malaysian classics in an easy, comfortable setting.

Mobile data helps a lot with food in Malaysia. You will use it to check reviews, find opening hours, translate menu items and work out whether a restaurant is actually inside a mall, down a side street or hidden in a food court.

Cash is still useful

Cards work well in malls, hotels and many restaurants, but cash is still useful in Malaysia, especially for street food, smaller shops and local markets.

We found Grab payments worked fine for rides, but the shopping side of Grab Pay didn’t work with our foreign cards. Because of that, it's probably best not to rely on one payment method.

KL has excellent malls and landmarks

Kuala Lumpur has a huge mall culture, with tons of shops, restaurants, food courts and places to cool down. Even if you aren’t usually a mall person, they are genuinely useful in KL because of the heat and rain.

For views of the city, KL Tower and the Petronas Towers are both worth visiting. The Petronas Towers are the iconic Kuala Lumpur landmark, while KL Tower gives you a brilliant view across the skyline.

KL bird park and botanical gardens were a highlight

One of our favorite experiences in Kuala Lumpur was visiting the bird park and botanical gardens. The gardens felt tropical and the bird park was excellent. We fed tropical birds and had them climbing up and down our arms, which was one of the most memorable things we did in KL.

We also saw wild monkeys while exploring the area, fortunately they were more shy than others we've experienced in, for example, Bali, but always remember to keep hold of your belongings around them.

Travel ESIM Expert Tip

Turn off data roaming on your home SIM before you fly to Malaysia. It is a simple step, but it helps avoid accidental roaming charges the moment your phone reconnects after landing.

We would also recommend carrying an umbrella, keeping a personal fan in your bag and making sure your eSIM is installed before you arrive. KL is much easier when you can immediately check Grab, maps and the weather.
