Speeds and coverage were pretty basic in Hong Kong based on our testing, but Firsty stands out with its unique approach: it only offers “unlimited” data plans. If you’re after flexible daily data or even a free backup option (you’ll need to watch a few ads), Firsty’s setup could be just the thing.
Nomad ranked in the top 5 for speeds in Hong Kong and the app delivers a smooth, user-friendly experience with live chat support. That said, we only got 4G during our tests and the prices are on the higher side without any standout extras.
Sim Local’s performance in Hong Kong was great, with good speeds and the ability to connect to multiple networks. Pricing is on the expensive side and there aren’t many extras, but if you’re after dependable data, it’s a strong choice. Learn more on the Sim Local brand page.
Saily shines when it comes to user support: fast, knowledgeable agents and solid security perks like a built-in VPN and ad blocker. Overall, it’s a strong provider, but in Hong Kong, speeds were among the slowest in our tests, we only got 4G signal and it’s one of the priciest options out there.
On paper, KnowRoaming ticked all the right boxes in Hong Kong: 5G, full signal and great pricing (especially on big data and unlimited plans). It also comes with perks for Visa cardholders and live chat support. But in our tests, it surprisingly turned out to be the slowest of all providers; so slow that it just didn’t really work.
Ubigi is usually a solid, reliable choice, but in Hong Kong, it just didn’t deliver. Speeds were among the lowest, the connection was patchy at best and prices are on the expensive side. There’s no live chat or extras to help make up for it either.
Our eSIM experience in Hong Kong
We’ve always had a soft spot for Asia and somehow Hong Kong was one of the few places we hadn’t ticked off yet. We wanted to see the iconic skyline with our own eyes, eat proper Dim Sum and of course, put a bunch of eSIMs to the test in real life.
We spent a few weeks bouncing around Hong Kong’s main spots, testing 15 different eSIMs along the way. Overall, our eSIM experience was really good. The city’s got a well developed and super competitive mobile network market, so it’s a great place for travelers who want to stay connected with an eSIM. Here’s a summary of our testing:

Key takeaways from our trip
- Even though we didn’t always get 5G signal, we never struggled to get online or stay connected. Coverage was consistently good.
- Most of the eSIMs we tested worked without a hitch; we were able to do all the usual online activities without any problems.
- That said, we did hit a couple of bumps. Ubigi and KnowRoaming, two providers we’ve had great results with in other countries, really underperformed in Hong Kong. Speeds were much lower than we expected, which was a surprise.
- Aside from those two, speeds were generally fast. Our top download speed hit 274 Mbps and everything ran smoothly for streaming, maps, uploads and the usual travel stuff.
- Every eSIM we tested supported hotspot sharing, which was super handy when we needed to connect our laptops or iPads.
- There’s a huge variety of eSIM options in Hong Kong, with plans starting from as little as $1, so whether you need just a bit of data or a full week’s worth, you’ve got plenty of choices.
- Activation was smooth across the board. We didn’t run into any setup issues with any of the providers we tested.

GoMoWorld topped the charts with a super speedy 274 Mbps, while KnowRoaming barely crawled in at 0.27 Mbps. That’s a big difference of 273.73 Mbps, which basically means that GoMoWorld was over 1,000 times faster. If you’re like us and rely on quick browsing, streaming, or pulling up maps when you’re out exploring, that kind of speed really matters.
Upload speeds
When it came to uploads, MobiMatter took the lead at 53.3 Mbps, which is perfect for sending files, video calling, or posting your latest travel snaps without the frustrating wait. On the flip side, aloSIM only managed 0.04 Mbps. That’s a huge gap of 53.26 Mbps, meaning MobiMatter was over 1,300 times faster. If you’re working remotely or sharing videos from your trip, those faster upload speeds can be a game-changer.

Signal quality in Hong Kong is top-notch. During our city centre tests, 11 out of 15 eSIM providers regularly gave us full signal bars; pretty impressive and a clear sign that Hong Kong’s mobile networks have you well covered.
A few providers: Firsty, Sim Local and Ubigi often showed slightly weaker signals at 3 out of 4 bars. But even then, Firsty and Sim Local still handled everyday tasks like browsing, messaging and navigation without any real issues. Overall, you’re unlikely to struggle with coverage in Hong Kong, especially central.
Price
Hong Kong’s eSIM scene is packed with options; whether you’re a light data user or someone who’s online all day. Compared to a lot of places, prices here are pretty reasonable and we even spotted a few free trials if you want to test things out first.
Here’s what stood out to us:
- Free (or almost free) trials: A few providers let you dip your toes in without spending much. GigSky gives you 100 MB for 7 days, Roamless offers 500 MB with no expiry and Yesim has a 500 MB plan for 3 days at $0.59. These are great if you just need something basic for a quick trip or want to see how eSIMs work before committing.
- Budget-friendly basics: If you’re after a simple 1GB plan for a week, we saw prices ranging from about $1.50 to $4.50. Providers like Instabridge, RedTeaGo, BNESIM, eSIMX, SimOptions, Saily, Nomad, KnowRoaming, aloSIM, Sim Local and Airalo all have something in this range. This seems to hit the sweet spot for most travellers.
- Mid-range plans: For a bit more data, 3GB plans (valid for 30 days) were generally between $4 and $8. And if you’re looking at 5GB, expect prices around $7. Brands like RedTeaGo, eSIMX, Roamify, Esimatic, eSIMo, Sim Local, Ubigi and Maya Mobile had plenty of these options.
- “Unlimited” plans (with a catch): A few providers like Roamify and KnowRoaming offer short-term “unlimited” plans (1-3 days) for around $3.50 to $7. Just a heads-up though, like most unlimited plans, these usually have fair use limits or slower speeds after you hit a certain cap.
- Short vs. long validity: No surprise here: 1 or 2-day plans are cheaper, while 30-day packages cost a bit more.
- Don’t forget discounts: Some providers run promo codes you won’t see elsewhere. For example, BNESIM’s base prices looked a little higher, but with our 30% off code, they actually turned out cheaper than some other brands (plus, they might give you a better overall experience).

How BNESIM actually performed
BNESIM really impressed us during our Hong Kong trip. Even though it only connected to Three’s network (no network switching available), the speeds were consistently fast and we never had those frustrating moments where pages wouldn’t load or videos kept buffering.
For context, getting these kinds of speeds on what’s essentially their budget option felt like genuinely good value. We could upload photos to Instagram stories without waiting around, video calls with family back home were crystal clear and Google Maps never left us hanging when we needed directions.
- What worked well: Pretty much everything we threw at it. File uploads, WhatsApp video calls, navigating with Google Maps, streaming music on Spotify, watching YouTube in 4K quality and even some casual mobile gaming.
- What didn’t work well: Nothing, really. We didn’t run into any issues.

BNESIM has a few different ways you can buy data for Hong Kong. There are plans just for Hong Kong, but they also do regional ones if you’re hitting up other Asian countries, or global plans if you’re doing a bigger trip.
They have two different types of data plans:
- The regular “One-Time” plans work like most eSIMs; you get your data and it expires after 30 days whether you’ve used it all or not.
- But they also have these “Lifetime Data” plans that cost more but don’t expire. The data plans don’t come with calls or SMS included, but you can add them if you need to. They offer pay-per-minute calling or you can grab an international phone number through their app, which is useful if you need a local presence for booking restaurants or whatever.

How GoMoWorld actually performed
The speeds were impressive (actually the highest download speeds we got in Hong Kong). The connection stayed reliable with full signal everywhere we went. We really put it through its paces, testing everything we could think of, and it all worked perfectly. We could stream videos, play games, upload photos, get work done; basically whatever we threw at it handled without any problems. For what we paid (the plan we used was among the cheapest in this data tier), this was honestly one of the best value eSIMs we used in Hong Kong.
- What worked well: Everything we tried. Web browsing was fast, emails and messaging worked smoothly, social media apps like Instagram and TikTok loaded without delays, we streamed HD and 4K videos on YouTube and Netflix with no buffering, Google Maps never left us hanging when we needed directions, video calls stayed crystal clear, online games ran without lag and uploading photos and videos was quick.

How aloSIM actually performed
This one was a bit of a head-scratcher. We got excellent download speeds, but the upload speed was almost non-existent. Oddly enough, it didn’t stop us from doing most things: web browsing, social media, video calls and maps all worked fine.
We think this was a temporary network issue, especially since we saw similar weird results from otherwise reliable providers. Most online tasks rely more on download than upload and we suspect aloSIM’s typical upload speed is usually better than what we experienced during testing – or it might just be that aloSIM’s upload speeds in Hong Kong are just not that good…
- What worked well: Despite the odd upload speed, all of these worked smoothly during our trip: web browsing, email and messaging through WhatsApp and iMessage, Google Maps and Apple Maps navigation, social media scrolling and posting stories, streaming music on Spotify and Apple Music, WhatsApp voice and video calls, YouTube streaming up to 4k and more. We didn’t experience any dropouts or long delays during these activities.
- What didn’t work well: A few things didn’t go as smoothly. Uploading large files or videos in 1080p or 4K was painfully slow; this was the biggest limitation. So while you can get a lot done on this plan, we wouldn’t recommend it for heavy uploads.

How Roamless actually performed
Roamless came in 9th out of the 15 eSIMs we tested in Hong Kong for speed (right in the middle of the pack), and we were only able to connect to 4G. From our experience, raw speed numbers don’t tell the whole story. In real-world use, Roamless worked great for us and it was the convenience of their service that put it in fourth place in this guide.
While we were still sitting on the plane waiting to get to the gate, Roamless connected automatically to the local network in Hong Kong and we didn’t have to do anything or mess around with settings beyond switching our mobile service over. From booking our Uber to watching Netflix during a surprisingly long ride from the airport to the hotel, everything ran smoothly.
We ended up using Roamless every single day we were there, all around the city and never had a single moment where we lost signal. Roamless was reliable and practical, which was great for us since this was our first time in Hong Kong and we needed internet for absolutely everything.

How GigSky actually performed
GigSky really impressed us during our time in Hong Kong. The connection stayed fast and reliable throughout our entire trip, and we had full signal at all times (no dead zones or dropped connections anywhere we went).
While it was only 4G (not 5G), that didn’t affect the performance at all. Speed-wise, they delivered the fourth fastest download speeds we recorded in the country, which is pretty solid. What really stood out was that GigSky was the only provider we tested that could access multiple local networks, including CMHK, CSL and 3HK, giving us better coverage than anyone else.
Everything we tested worked great: streaming, maps, social media, video calls with family back home, etc. If we’re being a bit picky, uploading really large files did take a bit longer than we’d have liked, but that’s pretty standard and didn’t impact our day-to-day use at all. Overall, GigSky was definitely one of the stronger performers we’ve tested in Hong Kong.

How MobiMatter actually performed
MobiMatter gave us a really solid experience in Hong Kong. We were only able to connect to the SMC HK network, but we got 5G and full signal coverage in all tested areas.
Performance-wise, download speeds were good; not the absolute fastest we’ve seen, but still plenty for everything we threw at it. Upload speeds were actually the best out of all the providers we tested there, which was a nice surprise.
We streamed videos in 8K, uploaded content to social media and shared the connection across a few devices. Everything worked without a hitch. Even Netflix ran smoothly on our iPad while tethered. Bottom line: while the download numbers don’t look record-breaking, the real-world performance was great.

We definitely appreciate having all these options in one spot, but it can get a bit overwhelming when you’re just looking for something simple. If you go for MobiMatter, be prepared to spend a few extra minutes sorting through all the possibilities.

MobiMatter has a ton of plans that work in Hong Kong (about 54 at last count). That includes not just Hong Kong-specific plans, but also regional and global ones that include Hong Kong in their coverage.
From what we saw, here’s the breakdown:

How Esimatic actually performed
Esimatic worked really well for us in Hong Kong. One thing that really stood out is that it connects to multiple local networks: we were able to access both 3 Hong Kong (Three HK) and CSL Mobile, which not all providers offer. This multi-network access translated into great coverage for us.
We had a reliable, stable connection throughout our trip, even when we ventured out to areas like Tsuen Wan and Sha Tin where coverage can sometimes get patchy. How eSIMo actually performed
eSIMo did a good job for us in Hong Kong. We were able to connect to two different networks: 3 Hong Kong (Three HK) and CSL Mobile, and had full signal coverage everywhere we went with 5G throughout our trip. The connection stayed stable and reliable, which is what you really want when you’re out exploring.
Speed-wise, it wasn’t the fastest we’ve tested, but downloads were good for general use. Where it held things back a bit was upload speed; uploading large files was a bit of a pain, especially when we tried to share HD videos.

They’re also hinting at more features coming soon, like SMS, incoming calls and even the option to get your own number. It’s definitely not a finished product yet, but it’s a promising step if you’re someone who prefers having calling options alongside data.

The app gave us instant retro game vibes, kind of like Mario meets eSIM. Based on the colorful, playful style, it feels like they’re aiming to catch the eye of a younger crowd (Gen Z, we see you).
Design aside, it’s actually clean and easy to navigate, with clear access to plans and info. Performance-wise, it takes a moment to get past the logo animation at launch, but once you’re in, everything works smoothly. We didn’t run into any crashes or bugs during our testing.

How Jetpac actually performed
Jetpac held up pretty well for us in Hong Kong. We were only able to connect to CSL Mobile (just one network) and got 4G throughout our trip, but the connection stayed reliable the entire time.
Speed-wise, they weren’t record-breaking, but we were able to get through everything we needed without hiccups: emails, maps, social media, streaming and calls all ran smoothly. The only area where we noticed some slowdown was uploading heavier video files, especially in HD or 4K, which took a bit longer than we’d have liked.
But generally speaking, nothing stopped us from getting things done. For everyday travel needs, Jetpac delivered good, dependable performance even if it wasn’t the fastest we’ve tested.

What sets Jetpac apart isn’t just the data; it’s all the extra travel perks that come with it. On the data side, they offer the usual local, regional and global plans you’d expect. You can also add a Voice Call Pack to make calls through the Jetpac app using a temporary number.
Aside this, they also offer:

As you can see, there’s loads of services, which makes it clear that they’re aiming to provide the full travel experience package.
Data amounts
Jetpac offers 10 different data-only plans for Hong Kong:
- Eight fixed-data plans ranging from 1GB to 40GB with validities between 4 and 30 days
- Two unlimited plans for 7 and 10 days
All these plans also cover China, Macao and Taiwan, so they’re perfect if you’re hopping between them during your trip. Also, every single plan comes with their “SmartDelay” perk too, which gives you free lounge access if your flight gets delayed.
Note: If you go for any pack that’s 3GB or above, you’ll get some useful freebies: WhatsApp chat, Uber and Google Maps navigation won’t count against your data allowance.
Calls and texts
Jetpac’s plans for Hong Kong are data-only, but you can add Voice Call Packs for outgoing calls if you need them:

No loyalty program (sad face). For a brand with so many features, we were hoping for something that rewards frequent users. Fingers crossed they add one as it’d be a great bonus for travellers who rely on Jetpac regularly.

App & experience
Jetpac’s app looks good and feels modern and well-branded, but the user experience has some issues. When you first log in, there’s a lot going on: perks, data plans, voice calls, support tools… all laid out in one big info dump. If you’re brand new, it’ll take a few taps to figure out what’s what. We just wish the data plans (their main product!) were a bit more front and center.
Once you get the hang of the layout, it does what it needs to do, but the performance could be better. The app runs okay, but we wouldn’t call it snappy; there’s some lag when navigating certain sections, especially the help tab. Also, the app logs you out automatically if you haven’t used it in a while, which is understandable but a bit annoying when you just want to top up quickly.

How Firsty actually performed
In Hong Kong, we tested Firsty’s top-tier “First Class” service expecting faster speeds, but the results were mixed.
We were able to connect only to one network called “Firsty” on 4G and got mostly 3 out of 4 bars; decent signal, but not full strength everywhere we went.
Download speeds were fine for everyday use, but upload speeds were a major letdown. They were so low that video uploads and HD calls became a real struggle during our testing. We’re not sure if this was a network-specific issue in Hong Kong or just how the service performs there, but it definitely held things back, which isn’t what we’re used to with Firsty.
That said, it was still usable for most everyday travel tasks like maps, messaging and browsing. Just don’t expect to be uploading much content or making crystal-clear video calls back home.

You’ll find that Firsty offers a different service to most eSIM providers. Instead of fixed data plans, they offer daily “unlimited” data plans, which are available from 1 to 30 days across three tiers: Firsty Free, Comfort+ and First Class.
Data amounts
Firsty caters to different needs and travel styles with their 3 service tiers. Here’s what you actually get with each one:
- Firsty Free: Basic internet access in exchange for watching ads. It’s perfect for emergencies, checking maps, messaging, or quick emails when you’re in a pinch.
- Comfort+: No ads, plus 1.5GB of high-speed data per day. Starts at just €1/day, making it great value for casual travelers.
- First Class: Their premium tier with 5GB of high-speed data per day, plus access to hotspotting and streaming.
Note: Just bear in mind that Firsty’s “unlimited” setup is actually a daily data allowance that resets every 24 hours. Once you hit your daily cap, speeds drop but you’re never cut off completely. For most travelers, the daily allowance is generous enough that you probably won’t even notice the cap unless you’re constantly uploading videos or live streaming.
Calls and texts
No traditional calls or SMS, Firsty is data-only. But you can still make voice and video calls using WhatsApp, FaceTime, or any other VOIP app. We didn’t have any issues calling over data.

How Nomad actually performed
As usual, Nomad didn’t disappoint us in Hong Kong. Even though we were only on 4G and connected to a single network (CSL), the speeds were excellent. It actually ranked in the top five for download speeds in our tests and came in second overall for upload speeds across all the providers we tried.
We had full signal the entire time and the connection stayed solid throughout our trip. It’s a good reminder that you don’t always need 5G to get a top-tier experience; sometimes reliable 4G does the job just fine.
The main reason Nomad didn’t rank higher in this guide was mostly because of the pricier rates compared to other providers. But performance wise, we 100% recommend Nomad in Hong Kong. Fast, consistent and dependable (exactly what we want when we’re traveling).

In Hong Kong, we were able to connect to two different networks (3 Hong Kong and CSL Mobile) on 4G, though we never achieved full signal strength, staying at around 3 out of 4 bars throughout our testing.
Despite the signal limitations, the connection was steady and reliable everywhere we went. Speed wise, they weren’t record-breaking but still placed solidly in the top half (7th out of 15 providers we tested). We were able to do everything we normally would without any real issues, and having access to multiple networks was handy when the coverage got patchy.
Bottom line: while it wasn’t perfect technically, the real-world performance was solid and we can’t really complain about the experience.

How Saily actually performed
In Hong Kong, Saily was surprisingly amongst the slowest speeds we tested (ranking in the bottom 3), especially for upload speeds. We were only able to connect to 4G through one network labeled “1GLOBAL,” which is Saily’s own network branding. We couldn’t see or switch to specific local networks, which was a bit limiting.
Having said that, our overall experience with Saily in Hong Kong wasn’t bad. We got a decent, reliable connection and were able to handle most online activities without issues. The main limitation was uploading heavy content; full HD videos were basically a no-go due to the slow upload speeds. For everyday travel needs like browsing, maps and messaging though, everything worked fine.

We’ve found that Saily keeps things pretty straightforward. Their plans are data-only and available for country, regional and global coverage. However, since Saily is part of the NordVPN family, all plans come with built-in security features that we don’t see with other providers:

Honestly, our KnowRoaming experience in Hong Kong left us scratching our heads. We had full bars, 5G signal and loads of data, but still ended up with painfully slow speeds (0.27 Mbps down, 0.46 up). Usually, KnowRoaming performs well for us, especially in Europe and the US, so this was a surprise.
We suspect it might’ve been a weird one-off issue with the network at the time, but since other eSIMs using the same local provider (3 Hong Kong) worked fine, it’s hard to say for sure. Either way, these were our results and we want to be upfront in case you’re considering KnowRoaming for Hong Kong.

How Ubigi actually performed
This was one of those rare times where we were genuinely puzzled. From all our previous trips, Ubigi’s always given us a reliable connection and pretty decent speeds, especially in Asia. But in Hong Kong, it was a different story; the speeds were surprisingly poor and we honestly didn’t expect that.

App & experience
Ubigi’s app is probably one of our least favorites, if we’re being honest. It looks a lot like their website with the same brand colors and good contrast, and it’s definitely cleaner than the site itself.
The main issue is usability; it’s just not super intuitive. When you log in, you’ll see your dashboard right away, but you’ll need to poke around a bit to find everything else you’re looking for.
That said, Ubigi has improved it significantly over time and we’ve got to give them props for that. The app works much better these days: it’s fast, responsive and much smoother since their recent updates. Definitely a big improvement from where it started, but we still think it needs work.

Hong Kong hits you with its energy right away. It’s fast-paced, dense and buzzing with life; it feels like the city never really switches off. At times, it was a little chaotic and overwhelming (especially when we were navigating the more crowded areas), but we also stumbled across some quieter, more traditional spots where things slowed down a bit.
People often talk about Hong Kong having a British feel, but to us it felt way more Chinese at heart, even with the double-decker buses cruising by. The vibe was a little more reserved than we expected, but we still met some kind people along the way, like a woman who helped us find the famous “Monster Building” when we were wandering in circles.
Hong Kong’s a city of contrasts: modern and traditional, polished and gritty, high-energy but also deeply rooted in local culture, and that mix is exactly what made it such an interesting place to visit.

Where did we go?
We spent about ten days exploring Hong Kong and tried to fit in a bit of everything. Here’s where we found ourselves:
- Hong Kong Island, especially Central, Sheung Wan and Mong Kok. It was packed and chaotic at times, but fun to wander through.
- Lantau Island, where we hopped on the Ngong Ping cable car, visited the Big Buddha and checked out Ngong Ping Village.
- Cheung Chau and Lamma Island, which felt way more chilled out, with some great hiking trails and a totally different vibe from the city crowds.
Oh and while we don’t usually talk about hotels, if you’re looking to stay near the airport, it’s worth giving a shout to the Four Points by Sheraton. We didn’t have high hopes, but it surprised us: modern, clean and way more comfortable than we expected. After spending most of our time in Hong Kong’s older, more traditional neighbourhoods, it was actually kind of nice to finish things off somewhere a bit quieter and more polished for our last night.
Trip highlights
- The Ngong Ping 360 cable car was hands down our favorite experience. We went late in the afternoon and somehow lucked out with a cabin all to ourselves, just floating above the mountains and sea, watching planes take off in the distance. Peaceful, scenic and honestly one of the coolest things we did. If you’re on the fence, we’d say it’s 100% worth it.
- Same goes for the Big Buddha and the temples nearby. They were colourful, beautiful and way quieter than the busy streets downtown. It felt like stepping into a totally different version of Hong Kong.
- The Peak lived up to the hype too. Getting there involved a bit of frustrating navigation, but once we finally made it to the top, the view of that skyline was exactly what we’d hoped for.
- And the simple things didn’t disappoint either. Taking the ferry across Victoria Harbour was one of those classic Hong Kong moments; the skyline views as you cruise across the water are iconic. Bonus tip: if you’ve got an Amex card, the fare is insanely cheap. We paid something like $0.15 for the ride, which felt like a bit of a hidden gem.
- Food-wise, Mong Kok delivered some great local eats. We stumbled on a little spot called Dim Dim Sum, where the pork dumplings and garlicky chilli sauce were dangerously addictive.
The challenges
- Getting around was way trickier than we expected. Even at big-name spots like The Peak, we found ourselves aimlessly wandering, searching for signs that just weren’t there. You’d think in a city like Hong Kong, it’d be easy to navigate… but nope, we spent a fair bit of time scratching our heads trying to figure out where to go next.
- Cash was another surprise. Hong Kong feels super modern in so many ways, but smaller shops and market stalls still prefer cash. We debated getting an Octopus card but skipped it because of the steep deposit. In hindsight, probably a mistake. Carrying cash turned out to be essential.
- And then there was our late-night food fail. We got back late one night and gave in to McDonald’s. Bad call. It ended up being one of the worst meals we’ve had in a long time. To make matters worse, a language mix-up meant we accidentally ordered double of everything. Not exactly our finest moment.
Any surprises?
These are just our personal takeaways, but a couple of things really stuck with us:
- One cool (and unexpected) thing we saw was the huge gatherings of Filipino people on Sundays. Whole streets turned into hangout spots, with people dancing, doing each other’s nails, sharing food and just making the most of their day off. It was such a vibrant, joyful slice of Hong Kong life.
- Also… Hongkongers love their sneakers. We lost count of how many people we saw rocking amazing streetwear looks. Plus, there are sneaker shops and outlet stores all over the place, so if you’re into shoes, definitely save some space in your luggage.
Final tips
A few practical tips we’d pass on:
- Wear good walking shoes: You’ll be covering a lot of ground and parts of the city are way hillier than you’d expect.
- Get an Octopus card or bring cash: Like we mentioned earlier, a lot of smaller places are still cash-only (though some will take the Octopus card). Just keep in mind there’s a deposit for the card, so if you’re only in town for a short trip, it might be easier to just stick with cash when you need it.
- Give yourself extra time to figure things out: Directions and signs aren’t always clear, even in touristy spots, so leave a little buffer for getting lost now and then.
- Prepare for a mix of smells: One minute you’ll be walking past mouthwatering street food and the next minute it’s something… less appetizing. Just part of the city vibe.
